FOG! Picks The Can’t Miss ‘Halloween Comic Fest’ Titles! at FORCES OF GEEK

Free Comic Book Day actually comes twice a year, and tomorrow, October 29th, the day wraps itself in gauze and dabs black makeup around it’s eyes.

That’s right, Halloween Comic Fest 2016 is here, at your participating LCS. Be sure to find grab bags of goodies, some Smarties and other healthy tricks at your local comic book store and as always, buy something, even a little thing to help out the store. Lots of stores have their own costume contests and more. Be sure to check with your store to see if they are participating or if they may have something else fun in store for the whole family!

And remember, kids, just like the speed limit, obey your store’s limits for free comics. If you are in an urban area riddled with comic shops this may be your opportunity to hit up more than your regular shop to be able to ‘collect ’em all’!

We’ve made some selections of Halloween Comic Fest 2016 books, labeled in creepy categories that have never seen the light of day, until now! Perhaps they were meant to be hidden forever! Klaatu Barada Nikto!

A true treat for fans of Hellboy in his twentieth year is this story set in 1952 written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi.  Frequent Bendis collaborator Alex Maleev, who’s painterly style defined a Daredevil run and slight to redefine a schizophrenic Moon Knight is a treat to see return to the Hellboy-verse.

To those familiar and to newcomers as well, the story takes place in the 50s — as we bear witness to Hellboy joining the B.P.R.D. in the field for the first time.

No doubt as this arc progresses, he will learn a lot about himself as he interacts with the team. Already he faces challenges like Agent Stegner’s prejudice and an uncertainty of his abilities in the field after being raised and coddled by the Department since he was discovered.

A series of 33 murders in a Brazilian village prompts the investigation into the supernatural which will be Hellboy’s first mission. Stay tuned to this series to see if he succeeds or fails.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. #1 is available on December 3. Highly recommended for Hellboy fans or new readers, considering the nature of this quasi-origin story.

EARTH PRIME TIME: BEST VAMPIRE COMICS

Gene Colan DraculaBoy, someone must have made me overnight, because with this October change in weather it feels like staying in bed in the daylight hours is the only thing that feels good any more. When you are literally drained by whatever work stuff, band stuff, or relationship stuff, you’ve just got to perk yourself up with a True Blood marathon or some classic vampire comic books.

Buffy, Angel, Faith and Spike … So I’ve got kind of a problem.

Buffy and Spike by Phil Noto

This … is just part of my problem - Buffy and Spike by Phil Noto

While my friend was letting me crash on her couch a few years ago (a required growing pain in this town), she let made me watch my first episode of Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Years before directing Marvel’s The Avengers, Joss established a world in Sunnydale, California where vampires, monsters, demons, and ghouls lived in the Hellmouth below Sunnydale High School. The show lasted seven seasons and spun off good guy vampire Angel (David Boreanaz of Bones) into a five-season run.
